Career Development
There are many opportunities for you to learn how to articulate and apply your skills from abroad. Whether it's including it in your portfolio, listing it on your résumé, or including it in your cover letter, take every opportunity to show what you learned abroad. If you want to continue to explore opportunties abroad think about participating on a global internship, conducting research, or taking your career abroad (many of our alumni have). See below for some resources that can help you take the next step!
Articulate your experience to your employers by creating an e-portfolio that includes your international experience. This allows you to reflect on your experience more in ways that your cover letter, resume, or CV would not give you room to do. Please see Learning Abroad Alumna and Global U Program participant, Savannah Talbot’s, e-portfolio as an example: https://savannahtalbot.weebly.com/study-abroad-in-spain.html.
Participating on a learning abroad program can set you apart from other job applicants; however, you must know how to incorporate your experience into your resume, cover letters, interviews, and conversations with future employers. Career Services at the University of Utah offers numerous resources for students on how to integrate their international experience into their job searches and future careers.

You’ve studied abroad—now what? Many returned students choose to enhance their international portfolio by interning abroad. An internship abroad allows students to work full-time in a global setting and gain cultural competency, professional experience, and career skills—all while earning academic credit.
Global internships are available for undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines in more than 40 countries, and the Hinckley Institute’s Global Internship Program is considered in US academia to be the most comprehensive and prestigious international internship program in the world. Take your study abroad experience further and apply for a global internship!
- During your Learning Abroad program, you may have developed an interest in a topic and, having returned to campus, would like to research this topic more deeply. The University of Utah offers opportunities for students to receive academic and financial support while conducting research through the Undergraduate Research Opportunties Programs (UROP).
- The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programs offers undergraduate students the opportunity to either assist a faculty member in a research project or to identify their own research project and be supervised by a faculty member throughout the process.
- Many students who have returned from learning abroad find the next step is to research abroad. Through the Fulbright Program, there are opportunities to conduct research abroad, to serve as a teaching assistant, to continue studying a second language, to travel and produce digital storytelling pieces, and more. Check out the programs available to students and the latest Fulbright news at the University of Utah!
- Throughout the year, the University of Utah's Fulbright Representative, Howard Lehman, offers info sessions to advise students on the application process. Keep an eye out for these info sessions in Learning Abroad’s Events Calendar here.
