First Steps
Learning Abroad will provide you with one of the most exciting, challenging and rewarding experiences or your academic career! We are here to help you choose a program and make the most out of it! You are welcome to send us an e-mail at learningabroad@utah.edu or come into our office in Union room 159 Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (except for holidays).
Here is our advice on how to get started:
1. Complete Learning Abroad 101
- This is a one-time information session that can be completed in person or through Canvas. All students must complete this hour-long session before meeting with a coordinator or submitting an application. Our office will check off this requirement on your application within 5 business days.
- All Learning Abroad 101 information can be made available in an alternative format with prior notification to the Center for Disability Services. The Center for Disability Services will work with you and Learning Abroad to make arrangements for accommodations.
Canvas Learning Abroad 101
We offer Learning Abroad 101 as a non-credit Canvas course which you can complete at your own pace. This option takes between 60-90 minutes to complete. Register for the Learning Abroad 101 Canvas course below:
Enroll In Canvas Learning Abroad 101
- Log into Canvas - will require DUO authentication
- Once logged in to Canvas, click the 'Enroll in Course' button.
- Click 'Go to the Course' or navigate to Courses to access the course content.
For U Asia Campus students, enroll in the Canvas UAC Learning Abroad 101 here: learningabroad.utah.edu/student/uac/
For Non U of U students, please contact learningabroad@utah.edu and request to be added to the course. A link will then be sent automatically to your email address.
In-Person Learning Abroad 101
Join a Learning Abroad staff member for an hour-long in-person Learning Abroad 101 session.
- Questions are welcome! All of our presenters have learned abroad themselves and are happy to help!
- Please arrive on time and stay for the entire duration of the session.
- All session dates, times, and locations are found on our Calendar.
In-Person Learning Abroad 101 is currently paused. Please enroll in Learning Abroad 101 through Canvas in the meantime.
2. Identify your Goals
Maybe you want to use your time abroad to hone your language skills, conduct research that will prepare you for graduate school, focus on developing career skills, or engage with the local community. Identifying what you want to get out of your program is a critical step to the application process. Once you've completed Learning Abroad 101, schedule an appointment with one of our staff members to discuss further.
3. Determine Academic Needs
If you want your Learning Abroad Program to be incorporated into your academic plan, you will want to discuss this with your Academic Advisor(s) early on so that they can help you identify what requirements you need to fulfill before graduation.
4. Start a Program Search
- Use criteria to search for the program that's the best fit for you
- Search by location, term, program type, language of instruction, field of study (major), etc.
- Review our Affordable Programs page for more information on identifying a program that meets your budgeting goals
5. Begin your Application
After you have found your perfect program you are ready to start an online application!
